In cooperation with two other companies, IBM will connect the blockchain technology with the Internet of Things (IoT) to help in drought-prone California. Also, the IT mogul has launched a blockchain platform in Melbourne.

IBM is one of the biggest IT companies in the world. This American giant understood very early that the blockchain technology can be used in many new ventures. So far, the company has developed shipment supply blockchain, food blockchain, and many more. Lately, IBM has been working on a blockchain network for the healthcare industry.

Managing groundwater usage

On Friday, IBM announced that the state of California is working on how to prevent droughts using the Internet of Things and the blockchain technology. Delta of San Joaquin River will be the research object. The delta covers over 1100 square miles. The river supplies water to the whole San Francisco Bay Area and the coastal California.

The research will be conducted jointly by The Freshwater Trust (TFT), a non-profit organization, SweetSense Inc., a monitoring system company, and IBM. The University of Colorado Boulder will provide additional research support.

The project’s scientists and engineers will try to demonstrate how the blockchain technology and IoT can be used to help humankind.

Alex Johnson, Freshwater Fund Director with TFT, said:

“Our strategic intent is to harness new technologies to develop a system that makes getting groundwater more sustainable, collaborative, accurate and transparent process, which is why we are using the blockchain. We now have the project team and funding to do it, and a strong network of partners in the region that are open to an initial testing and building phase.”

Blockchain platform on cloud service

Blockchain for water supply isn’t the only new project from IBM this week. As it turns out, the IT company has already released its blockchain main net out. The news came from Australia.

The platform is based on Hyperledger. That is an open source project that aims to improve cross-industry blockchain technologies. The Linux Foundation started Hyperledger.

Rupert Colchester, head of the blockchain and consulting practice leader for IBM in Australia and New Zealand, shared the IBM plans. Now, there is only one data center in Australia. But by the end of March, the company will establish the second one. The center in Sydney will join the Melbourne facility. Colchester said:

“By its very nature, it’s a distributed ledger technology so often ledgers are running in different locations and the demand for two is through clients and customers in this geography wanting to have high availability in the event of downtime and the like.”
